In search of long-lost relatives and BBQ. McMahan and Luling, Texas 8-17-2017.

First stop was City Market in Luling to check out the BBQ for breakfast.

Second stop was Jeffrey Cemetery near McMahan to search for the grave sites of two sets of great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers.

John Daniel Handley and Martha Ann Hudson Handley were my great-grandparents and the parents of my paternal grandfather, Daniel Hampton "Hamp" Handley.

Silas Bester Owen and Abbie Gail Jones Owen were my great-grandparents and the parents of my paternal grandmother Henrietta Elizabeth Owen Handley.

The house where Silas Bester and Abbie Gail Owens lived near here, is still standing.  This would have been the house where Henrietta was born in 1880.  A house that John Daniel Handley built is also standing.  The only reason I know this is because I ran into some relatives on the Owen side....second or third double-cousins, Tom Owen and son, Jeb Owen, while eating BBQ at R&G BBQ in McMahan (see below).  They were kind enough to take me for a drive around the area and I learned a lot about my ancestors.

McMahan is the home to R&G BBQ and Whizzerville Hall, which is also a pizza joint.

The proprietor of R&G BBQ is Roy Jefferey and  he makes some pretty good BBQ.
Whizzerville Hall is not your average pizza joint.  I was too full from eating BBQ for breakfast and BBQ for lunch to give it a try, but I will go back.

Next to the cemetery there is the old Primitive Baptist Church which many of my relative belonged to.  The original white, wooden church dates back to around 1900.

Lots of Owens and Handleys are buried here.
